Types of jewelry clasps and how they work
Lobster clasp
A lobster clasp is a spring-loaded fastening that takes its shape and name from the lobster claw it resembles. To open, simply push down on the small lever to open the claw, and release for the clasp to automatically spring shut. The self-closing mechanism is ideal to ensure that your treasured pieces stay secure around your neck or wrists.
Pull string
A pull string closure features a sliding knot with two loose ends that you pull to alter the length. Typically used on friendship bracelets with colourful woven cords, the extendable length of this clasp makes it a great gifting option and it can be easily pulled closed with one hand making it a popular choice for a bracelet clasp type.
Spring ring
A spring ring clasp has a circular profile and a spring mechanism. Similarly to the lobster clasp, it opens via the little lever and automatically springs shut once it is released. These clasps are slightly more fiddly to fasten by yourself, especially if you’re putting on a bracelet, so be sure to leave extra time or ask for help if you need it!
T bar
A T bar, bar and ring, or toggle clasp features two shapes at either end of a jewellery chain, usually an open circle and a ‘T’ bar that slips through and slots into place. Super easy to fasten by yourself, T bar clasps can also sit at the front of a necklace for an additional design element.
Popular types of earring backs
Latch back
Latch back closures are typically used on hoop earrings or other hanging styles. The latch back is made up of a post that’s anchored by a hinge and snaps into a catch on the other end of the earring making a continuous loop that keeps your earrings secured.
Hook back
Another type of earring back is the simple hook, also known as a French wire. Hook earrings have a curved post that threads through your piercing – the back is only used on drop earrings because they’re weighty enough to keep their balance.
Studs
Stud earrings consist of a straight post which threads through your piercing and is secured at the back with a butterfly back or similar. This is a popular style that’s easy to put on by yourself and keeps your earrings in place throughout the day.
