Behind the design

The techniques

Each piece in our chequerboard range has been individually handcrafted by artisans in Jodhpur, India, to create a unique piece of furniture. ‘The unique art of bone inlay comes from the Indian state of Rajasthan, and the chequered inlay has been handcrafted using traditional techniques,’ says Home & Gift Senior Buyer, Sarah Hughes. The collection includes black and white, green and white, pure bone and our elegant mother of pearl pieces.

The range

For the coloured checks, the resin is mixed and hand-poured, creating a vibrant contrasting pattern. The black and white sideboard is a versatile statement piece, while our soft green and white tallboy with its floral bone handles has a matching side table for an impactful bedroom pairing. We also developed a couple of pieces with a fresh, natural bone finish, and with our striking mother of pearl finishes, inspired by a recent design trip to India, each tile is made from a different shell, placed in the chequerboard pattern. The furniture is intentionally simple in shape to allow the material to shine.
