Curated spaces

The start of the new year always feels like the time to reset and refresh your home to blow away the cobwebs and experiment with a new aesthetic. We asked our Home & Gift Team for some fresh interior styling tips that can be applied with minimal effort, and they delivered. It’s all about creating areas of interest with homeware to catch the eye and lift your living area. Here are five easy ways to update your space, making the most of distinctive design details for a room with a view.

Table lamps are a quick way to update your décor without needing to make major changes to your interior. Vary the colours, materials and silhouettes to match your room and your mood and to refresh the space for the new season ahead.

Build on an existing colour scheme by choosing a lampshade that draws on prominent colours in your room or perk up an unloved corner with a contrasting design that adds interest. When it comes to bases, our latest collections include resin and mother-of-pearl inlays, bold chequerboard designs and fun tiger prints, offering an easy way to bring in some personality. Some of our newest lamp designs are inspired by mouth-blown glass art, combining vase-like bases with upholstered shades and open bulbs for a striking sculptural finish.

Consider grouping together several lamps of different sizes on furniture or shelving, for a decorative feature that also adds a warm glow. Alternatively, mix up the designs and shapes of the lamps in your room but stick to a similar colour palette for a stylish anchor that subtly pulls the look together.

On reflection

Already a go-to for maximising the light and creating the illusion of space in a room, clever positioning of mirrors can create a stylish focal point. Placing a wall mirror near a window will help reflect the natural light into the room, and if you have a dark or awkward corner where furniture won’t fit, an impactful mirror is a way to bring some beauty.

Hang several mirrors together on a wall in a hallway for a decorative effect that operates like functional wall art, bringing design details to an often-forgotten area. Choose mirrors with matching finishes and frames in the same colour palette or material, or mix it up with different shapes, sizes and finishes to suit your aesthetic.

Vases get visual

The vases in our homeware collections are more like works of art and can lift a room even without the addition of flowers. Choose from ceramic styles with bold wax-resist finishes, or mouth-blown glass styles that bring a kaleidoscope of colour and pattern. Add miniature bud vases along a windowsill to catch the light or place a large showstopper on a table or shelf to brighten up a functional space.

Our Home & Gift styling team suggests lining up similar colours of vases in varying heights along a dining table as a colourful centrepiece or grouping together clusters on a shelf or console table to add a little drama and depth. 78zin’s Art Director Dan likes to throw out the rule book when it comes to styling vases for photo shoots. ‘You’re not limited to using flowers, so go wild,’ he urges. ‘Try choosing greenery instead, such as eucalyptus, a selection of interesting twigs or pussy willow, depending on the season.’

In the frame

There’s nothing more uplifting than filling your home with personal snaps and memorabilia. Not only does it create a conversation starter when guests come round, but surrounding yourself with happy memories is the ultimate mood-boost.

For an eye-catching curation, bring several photo frames together on a shelf or mantel, varying size and shade or keeping colours tonal for a more uniformed look. Think about your grouping as a collection, sticking to a theme for the snaps contained within your frames, maybe selecting photos from one particular event to create a story.

Pull together the memories you’ve collected over the year - ticket stubs, postcards, souvenirs - and display them alongside holiday photos or family snaps for a themed gallery wall. Narrow hallways and stairwells provide a large backdrop to start curating your frames. You could even bring in wall art and mirrors for a real wonder wall.

Statement seating

Whether it’s somewhere to sit and take your shoes off in the hallway or a way to transform an awkward corner into an inviting reading nook, an accent chair can change the dynamic of a room. Essentially an impactful armchair, accent chairs can come in all shapes, sizes, silhouettes and finishes, but it’s their standout design that elevates them to more than just a functional piece of furniture.

From small occasional chairs for cosy nooks and compact styles for the bedroom, to sculptural lounge chairs that make a bold statement, it’s all about the finish. Focus on velvet or bouclé fabrics for touchable texture and choose a print or colour that either blends into your décor or intentionally contrasts against it with a striking pop.

With a deep seat upholstered in a choice of fabrics, our Loha armchair brings character to every room in which it sits. Compact enough to fit smaller spaces, while stylish enough to stand out in a guest room or hallway, it can be as versatile as you choose. Accessorise your accent chair with a throw draped over the back or a colourful cushion. Position it next to a window with a side table and a stack of books or place a decorative plant pot stand next to your chair and add some greenery.
